The Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) has announced plans for a major redesign of Highway 65 in the Branson area, introducing multiple elevated corkscrew loops and extensive barrel obstacles along the roadway.
The project, aimed at improving traffic flow during peak tourist season, will transform sections of Highway 65 with dozens of twisting corkscrew-style loops built as paved sections of the highway. Orange construction barrels will be strategically placed throughout the lanes and shoulders as part of the new “dynamic safety system.”
Construction is expected to begin within the next few weeks, with significant lane closures and detours likely on Highway 65 between Branson and Hollister. Officials recommend drivers use alternate routes such as Highway 76 during the initial phases of work.
“This is an innovative approach to manage the heavy tourist traffic Branson sees every year,” a MODOT spokesperson said. “The corkscrew loops will help with elevation changes while keeping things interesting for drivers.”
Local residents and business owners have expressed a range of reactions, from amusement at the unusual design to concerns about safety and navigation for large vehicles and RVs common in the area.
