A Hilton hotel in Branson dramatically collapsed into a giant sinkhole Wednesday afternoon, with little to no warning for guests and staff still inside the building.
The terrifying incident happened in a matter of seconds. Witnesses say the ground beneath the hotel suddenly opened up, causing one entire section of the building to drop straight down into a massive hole. Videos captured the shocking moment show the structure cracking and sinking rapidly as people inside scrambled in panic.
“There was no time to evacuate,” said one eyewitness who was filming nearby. “One second the hotel was standing there normal, the next it was just gone — swallowed by the ground. You could hear people screaming from inside.”
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and are still working to reach anyone who may have been trapped. Several guests and staff members were reported missing immediately after the collapse, and rescue operations are underway. At least a handful of people have been pulled out with injuries, though the full extent of casualties is not yet known.
The dramatic footage, which has already gone viral, shows the hotel wing tilting and then dropping into the earth with a cloud of dust and debris. Cars in the parking lot were also pulled into the sinkhole as the ground gave way without any prior signs.
Officials believe the collapse was caused by a large underground cavern collapsing, a known risk in the Ozarks karst topography. However, many are questioning how a major hotel was built in an area prone to this kind of sudden failure.
Hilton has not yet released an official statement, but local authorities have declared the area a disaster zone. Roads around the hotel remain closed as heavy equipment moves in to stabilize the site and continue search and rescue efforts.
This sudden disaster has left the Branson tourism community in shock. The hotel was fully operational with guests checked in at the time of the collapse. The images and videos circulating online are drawing horrified reactions from across the country, with many calling it one of the most dramatic structural failures they’ve ever seen.
The situation is still developing rapidly as rescue teams search through the rubble and engineers assess the stability of the remaining structure. Officials are urging people to stay away from the area while recovery operations continue.
More updates will be posted as information becomes available.
