Yes, it’s real. McDonald’s has opened what they’re calling the world’s first underwater restaurant, sitting inside a massive glass dome on Table Rock Lake.
The restaurant is fully submerged just off the shoreline. Diners step inside the reinforced clear dome and eat while surrounded by water on all sides. Fish swim right past the tables, and on a clear day sunlight filters down from the surface above, giving the whole place an eerie but cool glow. Divers in full scuba gear swim up to special hatches to deliver food and take orders from outside.
Locals and tourists who have already visited are losing their minds over it. One woman from Springfield said, “I took my kids and we all just sat there staring at the fish while eating Chicken McNuggets. It felt like we were in some kind of theme park attraction.” Another customer posted online that watching a big bass stare at his Quarter Pounder through the glass was the highlight of his entire Branson trip.
Of course, nothing this crazy comes cheap. A regular Big Mac combo now costs around $29, and the “premium dome view” seating with the best fish-watching spots adds another $15–20 per person. Some locals are already complaining that it’s way too expensive for McDonald’s food, calling it a tourist trap. Others say the experience is worth it at least once.
Building the underwater restaurant took over 18 months and millions of dollars. Engineers had to design the dome to handle constant water pressure, maintain safe air levels inside, and keep everything completely dry. McDonald’s chose Table Rock Lake because of the heavy tourist traffic, clear water, and all the existing attractions in the Branson area.
There have been some growing pains. Service is noticeably slower than a normal McDonald’s because every order involves divers. On busy days the glass can fog up from all the breathing and temperature changes inside. A few customers have also mentioned it feels a little claustrophobic if the lake is murky.
Even with the complaints, the place has been packed since it opened. Reservations are booking up fast, especially for evenings when the underwater lights come on and the fish get more active. McDonald’s says they’re monitoring how it does and have already hinted they might build similar locations in other popular tourist spots if this one succeeds.
For now, the underwater McDonald’s is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you’re planning to go, book ahead — especially on weekends. Whether you think it’s genius or ridiculous, it’s definitely one of the strangest things to happen in Branson in a long time.
